  16. <p>     For two hours on Christmas Day an unrepentant Nicolae and
  17. Elena Ceausescu faced an invisible tribunal. In answer to
  18. charges of genocide, subversion of the national economy and
  19. secreting $1 billion in foreign bank accounts, the couple
  20. defiantly challenged the right of their accusers to judge them.
  21. Excerpts:

  23. <p>     Ceausescu (arguing loudly): I do not recognize this court.
  24. Read the constitution.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Prosecutor: We've read the constitution. We know it better
  27. than you do.
  28. </p>
  29. <p>     Ceausescu: I will not answer a single question.
  30. </p>
  31. <p>     Prosecutor: What possessed you to reduce the people to the
  32. state they were in? Why did the people have to starve?
  33. </p>
  34. <p>     Ceausescu: This is a lie and proves the lack of patriotism
  35. in the country...

  37. <p>     Prosecutor: What have you done for the country?
  38. </p>
  39. <p>     Ceausescu: I built hospitals.
  40. </p>
  41. <p>     Prosecutor: You destroyed the Rumanian people and their
  42. economy.
  43. </p>
  44. <p>     Ceausescu: We do not intend to argue with you. The
  45. population had everything it needed...

  47. <p>     Prosecutor: Who ordered the shooting of the people?
  48. </p>
  49. <p>     Ceausescu (staring at the ceiling): I will not answer a
  50. single question. Do not interpret my silence as answers. I will
  51. answer only to the working class.

  53. <p>     Prosecutor: There are more than 64,000 dead in the cities.

  55. <p>     Elena (angrily): This is a provocation!
  56. </p>
  57. <p>     Prosecutor: All you did was science?
  58. </p>
  59. <p>     Elena (shouting): I am the president of the Rumanian Academy
  60. of Sciences! I am the First Deputy Prime Minister...
  61. </p>
  62. <p>     Prosecutor: Let Ceausescu tell us something about his Swiss
  63. bank accounts.

  65. <p>     Elena: Evidence, evidence, evidence!
  66. </p>
  67. <p>     Ceausescu: There is not a single account. You are a
  68. provocateur...

  70. <p>     Prosecutor (reading the verdict): On the basis of the
  71. actions of the members of the Ceausescu family, we condemn the
  72. two of you to death.

  74. <p>     Ceausescu (defiantly): I am not a defendant. I am President
  75. of Rumania and the Commander in Chief of the armed forces. I
  76. refuse to recognize this court.

  78. <p>     A voice interrupts, ordering the pair to stand.

  80. <p>     Elena (to her husband): No, dear, we will not rise.
